Kurt Kroon Cascade Church Co-Pastor

Kurt Kroon

Co-Pastor
kurt@cascadepdx.org

Kurt grew up in the central valley of California in a small town where he rooted for the 49ers, enjoyed the wide open space of living in the country, and had a very Christian upbringing. He met his wife working at a youth camp near Santa Cruz, California and moved to the Pacific Northwest for college. After getting married, Kurt started working as a youth pastor first in Hillsboro, and then in East Portland.

Eventually, Kurt transitioned into social justice work locally and internationally, and helped start Cascade as a community that prioritized curiosity in the spiritual journey.

“Getting to explore all the complexities of life and God with a curious community fills me with incredible joy. I love how we can wrestle with the improbability of being alive and learn from Christ’s invitation to contribute to the peaceful thriving of all people.”

Kurt and his wife Sally live in Vancouver, WA with their two boys

Sarah Swartzendruber Cascade Church Co-Pastor

Sarah Swartzendruber

Co-Pastor
sarah@cascadepdx.org

Sarah grew up in a few different places (Arizona, Michigan and then finally Forest Grove, Oregon) and after loving college in Southern California somehow found herself back in the Northwest to be a youth director on the eastside of Portland. Although Sarah’s educational background is as an elementary teacher, Sarah started working as a youth pastor after college as a “fun job”, hoping to attend as much summer camp as possible she realized her call as a pastor. Since college, she has received her MDIV from Portland Seminary and helped start Cascade. Sarah is passionate about faith experiences for all ages but specifically for kids and students, empowering and learning from generations to come. She finds that students have taught her immensely around conversations on sexuality, race, and TikTok. Her hope is to always be an active learner and listener.

“I am driven by kids and students, and believe they are our future, worthy to be loved and known, and want to help them realize how much God loves them and that all questions are great questions.”

Sarah and her husband Zach live in Milwaukie, OR with their two daughters and dog. They love anything active, spending time with friends, petting puppies, and playing games.

Jonathan Cotton Cascade Church Operations Director

Jonathan Cotton

Operations Director
jonathan@cascadepdx.org

Jonathan grew up in Happy Valley, Oregon and graduated from Warner Pacific College. He met his wife Camille at a young adult bible study and during that time they developed a love for working with high school and college age students. They are also advocates for inclusion, and have learned so much about ableism from their amazing daughter Lorelai, who has Down Syndrome. While his primary background is in business, Jonathan has actively worked with non-profit organizations and loves helping turn a vision into reality. He enjoys the details of organizational operations, but he’s even more excited to work with students at Cascade.

“I love it when people discover God in the things they’re already passionate about. We need more of that in the world, and I’m just excited to see all of the interesting, unique, and creative ways that might play out in peoples’ lives at Cascade.”

Jonathan and his wife Camille live in southeast Portland with their daughter Lorelai and dog Penny. They love all things Disney, supporting the Timbers, hanging out with friends, and enjoying everything Portland has to offer.

Sam Hedrick Cascade Church Worship

Sam Hedrick

 Worship Coordinator

sam@cascadepdx.org

Sam (he/him) and his wife Haley (she/her) came to Oregon from his home state of Oklahoma in 2019 for Haley to start a doctoral program. He grew up as the oldest of three, with parents working in various areas of ministry. Beginning to lead worship around the age of 13, Sam pursued music and church synonymously through college and his early twenties. At the age of 25 Sam stepped into his truth by coming out as transgender. Through the unfortunate relationship of liberation and loss, Sam began the journey of learning and unlearning harm and safety within the Church, family, vocation, and music. Through the last four (ish) years Sam has redefined his connection to faith, (re)igniting the desire to facilitate spaces of worship with magnified focus around marginalized and queer contexts; to know and be known by the Divine Creator and the communities we intertwine ourselves in. Sam and Haley’s hope and focus is to join with the other creative voices at Cascade to reclaim worship spaces as sacred and healing for all who want to take part.

Lizzi Congdon

Family Ministry Intern

lizzi@cascadepdx.org

Lizzi (they/she) grew up in Brush Prairie, WA and has lived in the area her whole life. They are currently a senior at Prairie High School and plan to move to Portland after graduating. They have loved working with children for their whole life, starting with volunteering in Sunday school when they were 8 and their sister was born. They began attending Cascade in 2018 from their family’s search for a more inclusive church and quickly grew to love it. Helping and working with kids is their passion and they plan to take that into their career in the future.

In their free time Lizzi loves to crochet, draw, sing, read, and spend time with friends. They plan to attend Portland State University and study psychology.

Cascade Board Members

  • Lauren Bleser

    she/her/hers

Lauren has been in Portland for 4 years. Prior to this, she has lived in San Antonio, Texas and upstate New York. She’s been an elementary school teacher for 20 years, and currently trains teachers in reading instruction. She loves to travel and dreams of one day living abroad. Lauren also enjoys reading, hiking, theater, and organizing murder mystery dinner parties with friends.

“I appreciate the diversity of speakers and topics at Cascade. I am continually introduced to new ideas and expanding my view of the world.”

  • Lyndsy Manz

Originally from Central California, Lyndsy obtained her bachelor’s degree in Portland from Warner Pacific in Religion and Christian Ministry. She met her husband, Jonathan, in graduate school in Texas, and they have since lived in various parts of the country working in higher education. Not predicting a global pandemic, the Manz fam relocated to the beautiful Pacific Northwest in January 2020. She’s a mother of three kids, spanning kindergarten to 8th grade. Lyndsy enjoys taking strolls (not hikes) through nature with her kiddos and exploring all the area parks. They volunteer with Friends of Trees to help grow the urban canopy.

  • Kennedy Coopwood

Kennedy (she/her) grew up in the suburbs of Washington DC. Though she spent most of her life saturated in charismatic Christian culture and ministry, in the summer of 2015 she found herself in Portland for a sabbatical seminary program focused on deconstructing some of the outdated ideas of evangelicalism. Though she returned to DC after the program, Portland left its mark and she relocated at the end of 2017.

Kennedy has spent a great deal of time working and volunteering with people-oriented organizations and nonprofits and has made a career working in Human Resources. She is passionate about making people - all people - feel seen, special, and valued. In her free time, you can find Kennedy hiking, reading, traveling to new places, and cheering on the Portland Thorns.

  • Josue Diaz III

Josue grew up in the Texas hill country. He lived across NYC and Europe to study design and pursue a career in consumer goods. He currently works at Nike on product research & development. Josue often returns to his hometown and the fresh river where he was baptized. A decade ago, he couldn't have imagined the reset he sought in Portland would manifest into a relationship with Christ. What a gift it has been.

Josue is enthusiastic about mentorship. He volunteers for various non-profits focused on coaching kids from diverse racial/ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds to develop healthy relationships, creative mindsets and entrepreneurial skills. This endeavor, serving the underserved, has magnified his joy at the intersection of queer, Christian and Latinx identity. He also serves on kids ministry at Cascade as a Sunday school teacher, learning from other great mentors!

Josue and his partner, Jon, reside in NE Portland where they enjoy cooking, gardening and running.

“Cascade invites us to be present with ourselves and one another, seeking ways to grow and flourish as we navigate the Divine gift of faith and identity."

  • Chris Routly

Chris was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, the middle child of parents who were ordained as Salvation Army pastors when he was very young. The family moved many times across the country throughout his life but before moving to the USA and marrying Anna, the greater Vancouver area in British Columbia was and remains "home." After attending film school in Vancouver, Chris began a career in animation, illustration, and web/graphic design… until fatherhood came along. It was then – taking on the role of full-time "stay-at-home dad" for his kids, and experiencing how men in such a role are still seen in the 21st century – that he found his real passion: smashing the patriarchy by advocating for dads who are the family's primary caregiver. He joined, and then served on the Board of Directors as President of, the National At-Home Dad Network, a nonprofit that serves, advocates for, and seeks to normalize such families. In his spare time, Chris taught himself the ukulele and how to cross-stitch, and he wrote, illustrated, and self-published an adorable children's book called "Sometimes You Need a Jellyfish." His Love Language is cooking delicious things for his friends and family, and he's a textbook Enneagram 9 who recharges by staying up way too late after everyone else is in bed.

Chris and his wife Anna live with their kids, Tucker and Coltrane, in southeast Portland, where, as a family they enjoy the food cart scene, camping in comfort, and protesting for social justice in dapper hats.

“There are so many things that drew us as a family to Cascade, but chief among them was how they value curiosity about big questions, without pretending that anyone has all of the answers. If I’m to err, let it be on the side of grace.”
